PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

School Uniforms

During the COVID-19 time, the College allowed students to arrive at school in their Physical Education uniforms on the days that they had those classes.

Unfortunately, we have had difficulty with students choosing to wear their Physical Education gear on days when they don’t have those classes.  Therefore in 2024, students will be required to arrive at school in their Academic uniform and then change when required, to be in their sports uniform.

There are two vacancies on the College Advisory Council for 2024. I encourage you to consider putting yourself forward for this important role. Elections will be held at the AGM on Tuesday 28 November.

College Uniform

The wearing of a school uniform is a positive expression of a child’s pride in themselves and the school. It is an integral part of being a student at Aranmore Catholic College, it promotes a sense of belonging to a group and promotes loyalty to the school. Our uniform and grooming policy can be found on the College website.

Recently, there has been an increase in the number of students wearing Physical Education uniform when they should be in academic uniform, notes from parents/guardians for non-valid reasons e.g. (uniform is wet) and students not wearing the uniform in full e.g., incorrect socks.

We ask all students to arrive at school wearing the correct uniform and that parents support the College in ensuring their child is dressed and groomed correctly when they leave home each day.

Science News

Year 8 Crystals

Crystals found in rocks are formed when lava or magma cools.  We are unable to melt rocks in a classroom so we are using potash in hot water to model the cooling at different rates.

Year 7 Incursion

Sally from Earth Science Western Australia visited our HASS and Science classes to talk about water as a resource. The students learnt about the water cycle and where Perth gets most of its drinking water from. The students got a chance to explore the different layers of the earth and their role in the water cycle with the aid of chocolate milk and chocolate biscuits. Some students didn't think science AND HASS could be so fun and delicious! - Ms Lian Carter

Year 8 Sedimentary sandwiches

Sedimentary rocks are made from layers of sediment building up over time.  Year 8 students demonstrated this principle by making a sandwich with different layers – complete with dinosaur fossils (sprinkles).

Year 9 Tectonic plates

Tectonic plates moving under our feet was first suggested by Alfred Wegener in 1915 but it wasn’t until Harry Hess’ work in 1962 that people took the idea seriously.  Today it is taught in school across the globe, most recently in Aranmore classrooms using Oreos and Mars Bars.

Year 10 Greenhouse

Year 10 students got to enjoy a lesson in our lovely Convent gardens while investigating the extent of the greenhouse effect on a small scale model.

Dryandra Science Camp

Three days of Science – the highlight of the year.

Last week 25 students attended the annual science camp to Dryandra.  They had the opportunity to trap and tag native mammals and go for walks through the bush to enjoy the native flora and geology.  The trip to Narrogin Agricultural College helped our city slickers understand a little about agriculture, and gave our country kids a chance to display their skills, while the afternoon in Narrogin gave everyone the chance to spend some time in a country town.  The addition of 5 Bilbies to the enclosures at Barna Mia delighted both staff and students, as these small native mammals can be tricky to observe.

With all of the exciting activities packed in over the 3 days, it seems the student favourite was the night hike at top speed with Dr Carroll.

Some of the comments from our campers are shown below:

The camp is really fun, especially the night walk and learning about all the cute animals like the brushtail possums and the malas.  - Olivia Hong

Science Camp was awesome, so many fun activities to do like meeting farm animals, learning how to trap animals and of course being with friends. - Caylan Richards

The camp overall was an extraordinary experience to have as I was able to understand myself better than I have before, get out into the outdoors as well as having the fresh air, explore more job opportunities that I may other wise not have thought I might do in the future and going on the night hike was something amazing as we were able to see the stars that you wouldn't be able to see in the light polluted sky in Perth. – Kimberley McLeary

It was really fun.  - Malakai Overstone

The 2023 science camp was one of the best parts of this year so far, with getting to know new people from different years, pranking teachers and dorm mates, chilling with friends, amazing night walks, funny bus conversations and music, new experiences, chaotic hiking journeys.  Getting to know teachers better, teachers finding out students crushes and secrets and who are your favourite teachers and students are at the school.  - Emmerson Casey

I loved that we had our friends in dorms having a great time and creating memories. I also liked that we could still have flexibility and were allowed to communicate with parents and take photos of the trip. - Fatima Abou Abdallah
