PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Keeping Our Students Safe

Last week I had reason to speak to the College community about an incident that had occurred on one of the buses our students use. In light of this incident, I urge all parents/guardians to continue having conversations with their children and discuss strategies they can employ to keep themselves and their peers safe.

Term 3

The start of the second semester of 2023 sees a number of significant events occurring, of which I will mention a few:

  • Parent-Student-Teacher evening – an invaluable opportunity for parents to directly discuss their child’s progress with teachers.
  • CPAF (Catholic Performing Arts Festival) – an array of performances showcasing our students’ talents in the performing arts.
  • Year 11 (2024) course selections – an important time for our current Year 10 students as they begin to formulate their academic futures.
  • Athletics Carnival – an opportunity for our talented athletes to demonstrate their abilities.

Parish Priest

After many years as Parish Priest at St Mary’s, Leederville, Fr Joseph Angelo has made the difficult decision to step down due to ongoing health issues. The College community wishes him well and holds him in our thoughts and prayers.

We look forward to working with Fr Jeffey Casabuena who will be our new Parish Priest.

The IEC 2.1 students played judge, jury and possibly criminal at the end of last term. They worked on their speaking and accusatory skills by finding out who “stole chips from the canteen” in a mock court case. - Miss Annie Dziadulewicz, Teacher

The boys won their way through to the grand final and won it convincingly! These boys were an absolute credit to the College; they kept their focus when the opposition challenged them and all played their roles with enthusiasm!

Thank you to Coach, Jazmine Farnan and Manager, Caterina O’Loughlin.

Year 8 Expansion

Year 8s are beginning their study of chemistry by looking at physical changes.  Each group was given a metal ball which was able to pass through a metal ring.

They had to use their knowledge of physical changes to prevent the ball from passing through the ring. The experiment was a success as each group was able to demonstrate and explain how increasing the heat energy in the ball caused expansion and decreasing the heat energy in the ring reduced particle movement causing contraction.

Bone and Joint Study by ECU

Dr Julie Boston and her research team at Edith Cowan University invited students at Aranmore to participate in a project about bone and joint health literacy.

Classes of students took part in co-design focus group workshops providing feedback on an existing educational game. Dr Julie returned to visit the 11 ATAR Psychology class last week to explain the research method and ethical principles underpinning the project.

Forming a partnership with Dr Boston and ECU on this project will provide further opportunities for our students to be involved in real-world research intended to be utilised by educators and sporting coaches. - Miss Sonya Cerny

Year 12 Human Biology – Gel Electrophoresis

A DNA fingerprint or profile is formed by running an electrical current through a DNA sample. We don’t have the technology to do that at school but we can mimic the process using colour.  A current will separate the different-sized dye particles the same way it will separate different-sized DNA fragments.

Year 12 Human Biology – Using Micropipettes

When using biotechnological processes it is important to be able to measure small volumes very accurately.  Year 12 Human Biology students received training on the use of Micropipettes which they will put into practice during a visit to the Harry Perkins Institute later this term.

Year 12 Chemistry Titration Competition

Dr Tilbury took a select group of Year 12 Chemistry students to Curtin University to complete in the annual Australia-wide Titration competition. Working in a real university laboratory provides great experience for our Year 12 Chemistry students.  As schools are only able to enter two teams, other students completed their titration at school and sent their results through. We are all waiting with bated breath for the results to be released.

National Youth Science Forum

Applications for Year 11 students to attend the National Youth Science Forum in January 2024 are closing on 31 July 2023.

Pleasingly, the National Youth Science Forum has announced, that as in previous years, it will also offer scholarships to attend the program, that take the form of a program fee reduction for:

  • Travel (access scholarship); and
  • Fee reduction (equity scholarship).

These NYSF scholarships, if a student qualifies for them, when combined with a Rotary club’s funding assistance, will greatly assist Western Australian students to attend the January 2024 National Youth Science Forum. All Western Australian students should apply for an access scholarship, as the travel burden cost will fall mainly on them.

Inter-house Athletics Carnival

On Monday, 7 August, Aranmore will be holding the Inter-house Athletics Carnival. Details regarding the event can be found on the Portal page. Please read the information carefully and contact your child’s Dean of Students should you have any queries regarding the event.

  1. Venue: Western Australian Athletics Stadium, 102 Stephenson Avenue, Mount Claremont.
