Advisory Council Vacancy

The College Advisory Council has a vacancy and Cheryl Blanton our Chairperson, is seeking expressions of interest from community members. The Council meets five times a year for around an hour and a half.

It is an important body in terms of setting College direction and providing feedback from parents.

Expressions of Interest can be forwarded to the Principal’s Secretary, Ms Dianne Bearham, dianne.bearham@cewa.edu.au.

Mrs Donna Dennis

I would like to advise that Donna Dennis, Head of Learning (English), will be accepting a secondment to St Martin de Porres School, in Broome, for five weeks. We thank Donna for her generosity and willingness to take on this role, as the school was unable to find a temporary replacement.

COVID Update

The College has noticed a slight improvement in the student absences due to COVID, although there are still approximately 40-50 students, absent each day.

Again, I wish to acknowledge our staff's generosity and good nature in filling gaps when teachers are away.

The College has also been advised that the medical authorities are expecting a difficult flu season and we are encouraged to get a flu vaccination.

I trust this newsletter finds everyone managing as best as we can in these challenging COVID times.

It is a pleasure to work with a group of dedicated and creative educators in the English Learning Area. The English teachers have been working hard to provide the best teaching and learning opportunities possible with many students keeping in touch with the courses electronically - via SEQTA and class notebooks.

One important way we desire students to demonstrate their achievements and learning is through the completion of assessments, but COVID has made this challenging. We aim to be fair but also flexible with deadlines depending on the circumstances. Although the College Assessment Policy doesn’t mention COVID specifically, the guidelines around expectations and procedures are very helpful.

On a different note, I wish to advise you that I have been “seconded” to work in a Catholic Care school, St Martin de Porres School, in Broome, for the last five weeks of this term. Our staff changes will be as follows:
- Mrs Kerry Ponton will be Acting HoLA of English and will also teach a Year 10 English class.
- Miss Ruby-Jean Hindley, who has recent experience teaching the course, will be teaching our Year 12 ATAR English class.
- Ms Casey Vinci be teaching a Year 9 English
- and Ms Sorba a Year 7 English class.

It is a privilege to be able to support another Catholic school and we are blessed that our staff at Aranmore are both well qualified and willing to facilitate the timetable changes and continue our teaching and learning programs.

All being well, I shall return to Aranmore at the commencement of Term 3.

Music rehearsals are back and running this term! Both staff and students are excited to be back in the rehearsal space and preparing for our upcoming performances.

Tuesday 14 June will be our Music Recital Night where students are welcome to sign up and perform one solo piece to an intimate audience in the Mercy Hall. Event is free and starts 5pm.

In Week 10 there will be a Performing Arts Incursion camp for Music and Production students, providing essential rehearsal time to prepare them for Catholic Performing Arts and Production Week in Term 3.

Remember it is never too late to learn an instrument! If you wish to learn how to play the guitar, piano, drumkit, trumpet, saxophone etc. Please email jacqui.matheson@cewa.edu.au for more information.

Year 10 Psychology

Year 10 Psychology students attended workshops at Murdoch University, including one looking at how the senses of taste and smell can be perceived differently by our brains.

Year 11 Chemistry

Year 11 Chemistry students were lucky enough to have Caitlin from Murdoch university come to Aranmore to run a Mole Olympics. Moles are one of the essential concepts in chemistry that can be tricky for some students. This made for a very fun and educational revision lesson.

Year 12 ATAR Psychology

Year 12 ATAR Psychology students visited Perth Zoo to attend a lecture on learning theories as well as to view animals who learn behaviour via different methods. Behaviour modification techniques were also discussed – with touching a snake being a top step of the fear hierarchy for those with a phobia of snakes.

Code Camp

Code Camp is where parents of kids aged 5-13 years find fun school holiday and after-school activities that empower children to get creative with technology. With 5 levels to choose from, from drag and drop to Javascript there is a Code Camp to suit every skill level.

On Thursday 7 April, Aranmore Catholic College held their annual Inter-house Cross Country Fun Run. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s carnival structure differed from previous carnivals competed at Lake Monger. This year, each year group was taken down seperately to compete in the 3km course at Britannia Oval.

There were some amazing results from all year groups. Congratulations to all the runners who competed and to those who finished in the top three, an amazing effort.

Understanding John's Gospel

The Council for Catholic Women Perth warmly invite you to hear Dr Mary Coloe PVBM at two free events in Perth. Mary is a Presentation sister and a professor of New Testament Studies at Yarra Theological Union.
