The evening began in the CASS and the families then had refreshments in Convent Garden.

Several parents commented favourably on our Student Leaders, who assisted on the night. They did us proud.

The Inter-house swimming carnival was held last week, and the weather was perfect.

This was well-managed and there was a high level of participation from the students.

Ministry News

The first four weeks of the year have been extremely busy in the world of Ministry. In Week 2, we celebrated our Opening Mass and Assembly and Fr Elias, our College Chaplain, shared his pearls of wisdom encouraging students to strive for their best in light of the message of Jesus.

Our first Mass provided our Year 12 Social Justice Leaders and Year 11 Student Leaders an opportunity to demonstrate their leadership skills. We look forward to the many opportunities that will be presented to them to further develop these skills throughout the year.

This week we launched Caritas Australia’s annual fundraiser Project Compassion to raise funds for people living in poverty. This year’s theme is ‘For all Future Generations’. Our Year 11 Student Leaders attended the online launch for this year’s fundraising efforts. As part of the launch, students were challenged to think about the theme in light of the great ‘YES’ that Jesus’ mother, Mary, spoke when the angel told her she was to become the mother of Jesus.

As a College community, we commenced our support of Project Compassion 2023 with a Shrove Tuesday Fundraiser, selling pancakes. This project was driven by our Social Justice Leaders, Wil Pascoe, Cyrine Lahoud, Temi Idowu and Jacob McGregor with the support of the Year 8-10 student leaders. Through this event we raised over $185. Thank you very much to Mrs Knowles for assisting the Student Leaders in the organisation and running of the event and to all who supported this very worthy cause and enjoyed a pancake! Students and staff are encouraged to continue donating any loose change to the Project Compassion boxes in their Form rooms, at the Front Office or in the Canteen.

This week also marks the commencement of the season of Lent beginning on Ash Wednesday (22 February). We gathered in small groups for a Liturgy in the CASS to mark the beginning of this 40-day journey to Easter. Special thanks to Fr Elias, Sr Janina, Sr Vicky, Mr George Lafferty, Mrs Russell, Mr Battistessa, Mrs Sorba-Martens, Mrs Dennis, Mr O’Loughlin and Mr Tanham, and all our student readers, who assisted with our liturgies throughout the day.

Lent is an opportunity to turn away from sin (avoid temptations and show forgiveness towards others) and turn back to God (renew one’s prayer life and relationship with God). During this season, some people like to make daily commitments by fasting, prayer, and almsgiving.

In Year 7, students are composing letters of introduction and getting their 'Passports for Success' “stamped” as they begin to use SEQTA, set personal learning goals and borrow books from our library.

Rubik’s Cubes can be spotted in Year 8 English classrooms as students engage with the documentary 'Speed Cubers' (2020), while in Year 9 the power of persuasive language is the focus. The theme of Australian Identity is considered in Year 10 and students are completing both analytical and creative writing.
We offer a variety of courses in Years 11 and 12. Students in both Year 11 and 12 English Foundation classes are preparing for their OLNA as Round One for 2023 is next week. We wish them success! The students in Year 12 English ATAR classes are studying the dystopian genre and our Year 12 students in English General are critically reading and viewing Australian texts like the first episode of the series Fires. In Year 11 English ATAR classes, students were challenged by the ending of Liam O’Flaherty’s short story “The Sniper” about the historical “Troubles” in Ireland with some students making connection to the recent film, 'Belfast'. Their peers in the Literature course, are also beginning their studies with prose fiction while those commencing a General Pathway are engaging with the issues raised in the documentary 'The Social Dilemma'.

You can find more details about our programs and assessments on SEQTA on the cover page for each course. As the year progresses, marks and comments on assessments may also be found on SEQTA.

We wish all our students a happy and productive year at Aranmore as they develop their reading, writing, viewing, speaking and listening capacities.
