PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Absence From School

Students who are isolating are marked as ‘Learning from Home.’  There is an expectation that schoolwork is completed (if the student is well enough) – this will be using either OneNote or SEQTA or a combination of both.

Students can communicate with teachers via SEQTA to assist them in their learning and teachers will be monitoring their engagement in their learning. No student will be penalised for missing an in-class assessment or test. Assessments that can be completed at home should still be completed if the student is well enough.

We encourage parents/guardians to communicate with the school if there are issues or concerns regarding their child's learning at home. If your child becomes sick and cannot complete work, please let the relevant Dean of Students know.

Pathways Coordinator

I would like to announce that we have appointed Mrs Claire Drabble to the position of Pathways Coordinator at the College. I am delighted Claire has accepted our offer and I believe that she will provide excellent support to our students.

Her office is located in the Counsellors area, next to Student Services and she can be contacted either by parents or students through SEQTA.

It is important for our students to consider which direction they would like to pursue in life and plan the academic program which best supports that direction.

Sara Jennings

I would like to announce that Mrs Sara Jennings has been appointed as short-term Principal at St Clare's School in Lathlain. She will take up her appointment in Term 2 and Term 3, returning to the College in Term 4. We wish her all the best.

College Happenings

I would like to congratulate our staff who have been finding inventive ways to compensate for the restrictions in place. They have managed to provide some Co-curricular learning opportunities for our students and I am delighted at the number of ways they have managed to do so. The best way to keep in touch with what is being offered by our staff is to follow our Instagram (@aranmorecc) of Facebook (aranmorecatholiccollege) social media pages. It has some great shots of students participating in such things as a visiting artist program, swimming for our Year 7 and 12 students, a fund raising day for Ukraine and flood victims to name a few.

Ministry News

Despite the current challenges, we have been quite busy in Ministry. For the past two weeks, our Year 12 Social Justice Leaders have been overseeing a Whole School Social Justice Project – “Make Peace Not War” – which has involved the creation of paper cranes and messages of hope as a show of support and solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

In Japanese culture, the 'orizuru', literally meaning 'folded crane', symbolizes peace, happiness, healing and recovery. Students from all year levels were given the opportunity to contribute to this during a Pastoral Period.

This Whole School Social Justice Project culminated with a Free Dress Day on March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day – and all students and staff were asked to donate as much as they could, with the donation being split between supporting those who have been affected by the floods in the eastern states and those who have been affected by the war in Ukraine.

On Tuesday, 15 March, our Year 12 Student Leaders attended the annual Perth Secondary Youth Leadership Conference. We would usually attend this event in person, but due to COVID-19 we remained on campus and participated in it virtually, along with other secondary schools from around Perth. Some take-aways from the Conference for our students included:

• “Your age does not determine your ability to achieve extraordinary things.” ~ Wil Massara, CEO of the Youth Leadership Academy Australia

• “Satisfaction is more important than success” ~ Marcus Wong, WA-based Photographer / Filmmaker / Graphic Designer

• Be a “RICH” leader (Responsibility – Interested – Character – Humble) ~ Marcus Wong

• “Our mental fitness is just as important as our physical health and often people need a moment of active listening” ~ Kendall Whyte, CEO of the Blue Tree Project and 2022 WA Young Australian of the Year

• “NO” means “Next Opportunity”

Let us continue to hold in our prayer all those in need of extra care and compassion,

especially at this time, including all those affected by the floods in the eastern states, the war in Ukraine and the pandemic worldwide. You may like to use the Prayer of Consecration, which was written by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB, Archbishop of Perth, to pray for the people of Ukraine.

Lenten blessings,

Sr Emma Llewellyn
Head of Ministry

SCIENCE NEWS

Year 8 Snake Spirals
Heat can be transferred in three different ways; convection, conduction and radiation. An alfoil snake spinning due to the heat rising from a candle helps students visualise convection.

Year 7 - Slime

Year 7s were learning about the states of matter and physical change during the past couple of weeks and they had the opportunity to make slime on Tuesday. They have also been learning how to conduct experiments and record results. This activity allowed the students to compare qualitative results and understand errors that occurred during the process of making slime.  - Miss Casey Donaldson

Year 9 Enzymes

Without enzymes no living cell could function, they cause reactions in our body to occur ten thousand times faster! Here Year 9’s are looking at how the concentration of pepsin (a stomach enzyme) affects its rate of action.

Year 9 Forensics Spectrometers

The study of fibres includes the use of a spectrophotometer.  While you won’t find one of these in any high school science lab we can use a Spectrometer to help students understand the science behind them.

Year 9 Bite marks

Roll-ups make a great skin proxy to research bite marks.

Year 10 Physics - Cars

The fun of racing a car down a ramp never gets old – though in physics you do need to work out its velocity.

Year 12 Human Biology Brain Dissection

Dissection of a sheep brain is a great way for students to consolidate their learning on the structure of the brain.

Year 12 General Human Biology – Bodies

The Year 12 General Human Biology class has started the year learning about the coordination of the human body, in particular, the bones, joints, and muscles. Students were able to use the basketball court before the rain set in on Tuesday to label the areas of muscles in the body. They drew two outlines of the body and labelled muscles on the front and back. This is in preparation for their next two assessments in the second half of the term. - Miss Casey Donaldson
