School-Based Immunisation Program – using VaccinateWA

The School-Based Immunisation Program (SBIP) is a well-established service that offers National Immunisation Program immunisations to students in Years 7 and 10.

Read More qxif-angle-right

This year, the SBIP will also offer COVID-19 vaccinations to eligible students in Years 7 through to 12 at selected schools as part of the regular schedule of immunisations based within schools.

The VaccinateWA system is now to be used by parents/carers to complete the vaccination consent form in order to consent to their children/dependents receiving vaccinations whilst at school. (Note: VaccinateWA is not being used to book appointments for the School Based Immunisation Program).

To provide consent for vaccination, the first step is to register the child/dependant on VaccinateWA. Log into your VaccinateWA account and follow the steps to “Add or manage dependants”. If you do not have a VaccinateWA account, you will need to create one for yourself first.

Step-by-step information for using VaccinateWA is available on the HealthyWA website. Please call 13 COVID (13 26843) if you have any technical issues with VaccinateWA.

If you are unable to complete the online consent form - and you have not already handed in a paper consent form – the school will have forms available for you to use. If the information you provide needs to be clarified, you may be contacted by a staff member from the vaccination team.

If you have already completed and returned a paper consent form, the SBIP team are currently uploading the information into the VaccinateWA system. This process may take several weeks, and you will receive an email confirming once it has been done.

Ministry News

Term 2 has been jam-packed with regards to Ministry. As many of our events had to be cancelled or postponed in Term 1, it has been wonderful to gather again in large groups to pray and celebrate our faith, mission, charism and significant moments in the life of our College, for students and staff alike. Here is a snapshot of the busyness of Term 2…

Read More qxif-angle-right

On 6 May we were able to hold our Year 7 Retreat Day, ‘Walking the Sea of Galilee’, which was our first Retreat for this year. A Retreat is an opportunity for students to take a break from the busyness of the normal school day, spend time with their peers and staff in a different environment, and have intentional moments of stillness, silence and reflection. Our Year 7 students and accompanying staff walked from Whitfords Nodes Park (Hillarys) to Clarko Reserve (Trigg) along the beautiful west coast, stopping for moments of reflection in small groups along the way. We were blessed with lovely weather and our Year 7 students were a credit to themselves and our College – thank you and well done, Year 7s!

Kelly and Rice Day was celebrated on 10 May, which offered students and staff in these two Houses the chance to reflect on and celebrate the meaning and significance of their House namesakes: Brother Tony Kelly and Blessed Edmund Rice. After a combined House Liturgy, Kelly and Rice students enjoyed a sausage sizzle together, and staff enjoyed a shared morning tea provided by our Kelly and Rice colleagues. Thank you to our House Mentors, Dr Steve Carroll and Miss Ruby-Jean Hindley, for organising and supporting Kelly and Rice Day.

On 19 May our Year 12 Social Justice Leaders represented our College by attending the Archbishop’s Secondary Schools LifeLink Launch Day. Usually, we would host this special event here at Aranmore, and host Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB, CEWA staff, and students and staff from other Catholic secondary schools in person; however, due to COVID, this was changed to an online event.

At our Whole School Assembly on 20 May – the first for this year – we were able to formally acknowledge and congratulate our new Year 7 Student Leaders as follows:

  • Kelly House – Audra Garbenis
  • McAuley House – Sapphire McLeod
  • Pascoe House – Summer Adams
  • Rice House – Kylah Tuheke Kupa

On 24 May we held our first Years 7-12 Student Leaders’ Lunch and Coaching Session for this year. It was a great opportunity for our Student Leaders from various year levels to come together and share in some ideas, planning and formation. As part of this, we reflected on five leadership lessons from geese:

  • People who share a vision and live their values, help each other get where they are going.
  • With as much sense as geese, we will stay in formation, and be ready to give and accept support.
  • It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks. We need to respect and protect each other’s skills and resources.
  • Our “honking” needs to be encouraging. Outcomes are more powerful when there is support and encouragement.
  • With as much sense as geese, we will stand by each other – when times are tough and when we are strong, supporting the line of one.

We were pleased to be able to go ahead with our planned Year 9 Retreat and Activity Days on 26 and 27 May. Our Year 9 students completed a walking pilgrimage in the footsteps of the Christian Brothers, one of the founding religious congregations of our College, beginning outside Aquinas College in Salter Point and ending at Clontarf Aboriginal College in Waterford. Students stopped along the way for small group discussions and reflections. We were fortunate to have Brother Terry Casey cfc, a Christian Brother and former student of Aranmore Catholic College (CBC Leederville), join us and share some of his personal story, as well as the history of Blessed Edmund Rice and the Christian Brothers, in the beautiful, historic Clontarf Chapel. Thank you to our Year 9 students and accompanying staff for their enthusiasm, positivity and participation in these special days.

We have launched our annual Vinnies Winter Appeal. Please refer to the poster as to what items each year level has been asked to donate. We have already received some donations, so thank you for your generosity and support. We will continue to accept donations until the end of Week 3 Term 3, culminating with our annual Winter Sleep Out on 5 August. This special overnight event is a highlight on our College calendar, particularly for students from Years 10-12, as it is an opportunity for them to spend time with friends, peers and staff outside the classroom, whilst learning more about the issue of homelessness and experiencing (to a small degree) what it is like to be homeless or “sleep rough”. There is also a fundraising component, with all sponsored donations going towards the St Vincent de Paul Society (Vinnies). Thank you to those students and staff who have already signed up to do the Winter Sleep Out.

Looking ahead to Term 3, we will be holding our rescheduled Year 12 Retreat on 19 and 20 July (first two student days of Week 1 Term 3) at the Telethon Speech and Hearing Centre in Wembley. Year 12 students and parents/guardians have received an information letter regarding Year 12 Retreat in Form and via SEQTA. This Retreat is one of the highlights of the final year for Year 12 students. It is an integral and, hence, compulsory part of the Year 12 program. Our Year 12 Retreat staff team, including Mr Ben Grose and myself, are looking forward to the privilege of spending these special days with the Year 12 cohort.

May you and your loved ones enjoy the winter break. May it be a time of relaxation and refreshment. Let us continue to pray for peace and a change of heart in all places of conflict, especially in Ukraine.

Blessings,
Sr Emma Llewellyn
Head of Ministry

Intensive English Centre News

Refugee Week

Last week in class, many IEC students told oral and written stories of their journeys as refugees or migrants to Australia and shared their experiences of first arriving in Australia. Our students in the Intensive English Centre currently come from Ukraine, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Bhutan, Sudan, Eritrea, Burundi, Tanzania, Thailand, Vietnam and Hong Kong. They are a wonderfully resilient, bubbly, respectful and kind group of students who are keen to learn.

To celebrate the end of Refugee Week, the IEC students, some EALD students, their teachers and support staff had a special event on Friday afternoon. Students were invited to wear the traditional clothes of their country on the day and they looked beautiful in a rainbow of bright colours. Students cooked and brought traditional food from their countries to share with each other outside and they played games together while they ate and chatted.

After that, the students and teachers went to the classroom to continue the party, where students chose traditional music videos. After a shy and hesitant start, many students and staff got up and danced together in a big circle, learning new dance moves from other countries. It was very noisy and hot, but there was a lot of laughter and fun that was had, as well as a sense of community, friendship, trust and belonging that was built and felt by all.

Thank you to Declan Tanham and Shannon Smith for their support of this event and to Annette Preshaw for taking photos. Finally, a huge thank you to the wonderful IEC, EALD and Student Support Team for their help and participation to make it such a happy and memorable event for our amazing students.

Year 8 Revision

Teachers try many different activities during revision lessons to make them engaging and educational. Here Miss Voung has placed large sheets around the class with topics covered during the term. Students move around the class in pairs adding everything they know about that particular topic to the paper. When a timer goes off, they move to the next sheet, here they need to read all the information the previous pair has written before adding their own new information to the sheet. This encourages students to explain their knowledge in full so other students can read it. It also means they need to read other student's work (revise) before adding their own points.

Year 9 Stem - Smart Programming Robots

Our Year 9’s are lucky enough to take part in two sessions of Robotics building and programming. First it was programming a robot to perform various manoeuvres, next building a robot, including the wiring and electrics. This is run by presenters from Stem Smart and gives our students an idea of some of the amazing careers that are possible in STEM.

Year 9 - Vectors

We learned the math of arrows and how light can cancel itself out. The arrows can be used to indicate the presence or absence of photons. - Cameron Pryce

Einstein First

We have enjoyed having this experience because it has given us a new style of learning Physics in the classroom. - Olivia Wolmarans & Hunter Pascoe

I have found this program to be enjoyable and fun.  We used all different types of things to find out interesting Science information. - Cameron R

Year 9 Forensics - Murder Mystery

As our Forensics Finale, Cindy from Murdoch University came to take students through a Murder Mystery box.  The aim was to use all the forensics skills they have learned through the semester to gather evidence to open the many locks on the box which contained the final piece of information to solve the crime.

Year 10 Seek out Science

Year 10 Extension students had a great day at Murdoch University attending Seek out Science.  They attended lectures from successful science professionals who discussed the value in studying science and where it can lead to after school and university. Students also engaged in a variety of practical, hands-on science workshops in subjects including forensic science, sports and exercise science, psychology and marine science.

Year 10 Mole Olympics

On Friday of Week 9, the Year 10 Science Extension class partook in the Mole Olympics. Thanks to Caitlin from Murdoch University who was working with us for her final time before she moves to the Telethon Institute.

The Mole Olympics was to enhance their course this term by exploring Avogadro’s Number and its relationship to the particles in a Mole of any substance.

Students undertook a series of friendly competition tasks aimed at giving a tangible idea of the enormity of the humble chemical mole.  Which is : 6.02214076 × 1023

The mole is one of the most basic measurement units of chemistry. One mole of a substance contains 6.02 x 1023 molecules or atoms of that substance, and the mass of a single mole of substance is known as its molar mass. The development of the mole and molar masses was paramount to advancing chemistry because it created a common unit of measurement across the periodic table.

Fun Fact: The number was not actually determined by Avogadro himself. It was given his name due to his outstanding contribution to the development of molecular theory.

Year 11 Human Biology ATAR - Muscles

Conducting investigations is part of the science curriculum from 7-12.  Students studying Human Biology have the added component of ensuring their experiments involving humans are conducted ethically.  Before enlisting subjects in their deltoid muscle investigation, Year 11 Human Biology students needed to determine how to conduct their experiment while satisfying the ethical standards.

Year 11 Gen Human Biology – Phases of Mitosis

Cells are the basic units of life!

Beginning the reproduction unit with a strong start, the Year 11 General Human Biology class have been looking at the stages of cell division. In week 9, students jumped from diagrams of mitosis to real cells under a microscope. Students worked together to identify and label the stages of mitosis they see. Well done, Year 11s! - Ms Grace Easter (Pre-Service Teacher)

Year 12 Chemistry - Titrations

Titration is a chemical process that requires patience, coordination and mathematical skill to first quantify the reaction of a substance of known concentration, then use that information to determine the concentration of a second sample.

On Wednesday night, Aranmore participated in the annual RCIA Titration competition at ECU Joondalup. This is not only an opportunity to test their skill and compete against other schools but also to work in a real university lab under the guidance of university Professors.

We are still waiting for the results to come in but wish the best of luck to Marco, Matthew and Tyson.  Special thank you to Tyson who was a last-minute addition to the team; he started off very nervous but soon got down to work.  Thank you also to Year 12 Chemistry teacher, Dr Carroll.

Year 12 Human Biology - Natural Selection

Sometimes really simple materials can help students understand complex concepts.  Here our Year 12 Human Biology students are using coloured paperclips to represent various alleles and determining how different environmental factors affect the gene pool.

Netball News

I just want to take a small moment to thank everyone for their amazing efforts at the Netball Carnival. We had 7 teams - so over 70 players in action and 15 Coaches/Helpers to support them AND they did us proud!! For many it was their first exposure playing competitive netball... and with the added pressure of the weather - they all took it in their stride and pretty much got on with it!

Read More qxif-angle-right

A few of our teams missed out on progression to cross-over finals by one win or just percentage. This was frustrating but many found it a huge learning experience and character building!

Our Year 7/8 girls made a good showing - and remember getting two teams to Elimination Day is a strong representation. The games were pretty tough for our 2nd side and we thank Year 12 student Georgia McCafferty (a netball program athlete) for her time and effort in coaching and providing important feedback and guidance to our youngest. Ms Girando had some great stories to tell me of the competitive nature of her Team 1 players, who would have come away with some valuable learnings... So thank you too Ms Bel Girando!

My Year 9/10 girls kept plugging away each game, keeping their noses in front, with a sliver chance of potential cross-over final still alive going into the last game. However, this wasn't to be. I must make mention of the outstanding efforts of Alix McWha from my team... she was nothing short of 'superhuman’ at times, coming flying from seemingly nowhere to take some incredible intercepts and set the team up with yet another opportunity to score. Alix lead a very productive backline who produced MANY turnovers for our team!

Over to our boys teams who were super impressive this year. Our team of 10 Year 7/8's should be proud of themselves for their achievement. Having made it through selection from the 47 Year 7/8's who nominated, to playing some great netball, and finally narrowly missing a cross-over finals berth, it was an amazing effort. Well done to Year 11 student, Rachel Cant (another netball program athlete, achieving great things in her netball world). We thank you for your efforts in coaching our youngest boys and helping them with their netball experience.

Our Year 9/10 Boys, together with Mr Max Hearn (Prac Teacher) blasted their way through the rounds, 'undefeated', winning many games convincingly, only to come across a tough opponent in their cross-over final. A great first up competition for most of these boys.

The Open Boys were also two teams strong! Prac Teacher, Ms Selina Foti, was in charge of Team 2 and guided them through a few challenges with some early team changes and late injury withdrawal. The boys certainly learnt more about the game and a lot about their own capabilities, which surprised them.

Last but certainly not least, our Open Boys Team 1, our MOST successful team on the day. Undefeated through the rounds, a cross-over final and an elimination final, they earnt themselves a spot in the Finals Day on the 4 August. They are 1 of 4 teams who will play in a semi-final and the two winners will play in a Grand Final on the same day, with one becoming HSC Premiers! We thank Ms Charlize Underwood, who was instrumental in coaching and helping the boys to play some very clever and controlled netball, with a splash of 'OMG' at times to keep it interesting for the spectators! Awesome achievement Team 1. I will be in touch regarding the details for the Finals Day.

Well done to all those who played, coached or helped out in some way - The Netball Program is super proud!

And I’ll leave you with a comment from one of our newest parents:

I was able to watch a couple of the Year 7/8 boys games yesterday and I was very impressed with how they played and their sportsmanship towards the other players and umpires.

Their coach did a great job in wrangling a group of energetic teenage boys! She always had them to their games on time, organised in their positions and shared her knowledge and love of the game.

My son really enjoyed the day - rain and all!

Yesterday made me very proud to be an Aranmore parent! - C

Rugby v Scotch Games

In late June, the Year 8 and 9 rugby teams travelled over to Scotch to play rugby. With expansive rugby on display, the Scotch defence was stretched and it was only a matter of time before gaps started to appear and the vision of the Aranmore players was such that these gaps and open our account.
In both games the players displayed great team rugby with several tries coming from play which transitioned from one wing to the other and back again demonstrating why rugby is clearly the BEST team sport out there.

Statistics from the two matches combined read:
Aranmore Year 8 67 - 0 Scotch
Aranmore Year 9 78 – 0 Scotch

To put this result into perspective, the Scotch Year 9 team in the PSA competition have not lost in two years!!

Well done to all who participated, a great team performance by both teams.
