mandarin

Aranmore Catholic College offers Chinese (Mandarin) as a Second Language from Year 7 to Year 12. Given that Mandarin is one of the United Nation’s six official languages and is currently spoken by over 1 billion people worldwide, studying Chinese will open a world of opportunities for our future global citizens.

The College’s Mandarin Language program allows students to share the aspects of living in Chinese-speaking communities and popular culture. As a result, they develop an understanding of what it is to be Chinese and can compare their own lives to those of others in Chinese-speaking communities with a focus on communication and understanding.

The course is designed to provide students with a strong grounding in the Chinese language and culture through a range of topics related to student's daily lives by incorporating textbook learning, intercultural projects, and excursions that focus on festivals, traditions and food tasting. ICT is also used in class to enhance understanding.

Students are strongly encouraged to communicate in Chinese within the school's multi-cultural environment while improving their understanding of their own language. Furthermore, the course equips students with generic language-learning skills, which are helpful for studying any language in the future.
